Heat-seeking material from the idiosyncratic Ikonika, on Hyperdub. Conspicuous by her absence from the release schedule for what seems like quite some time, her first Hyperdub release since 2010 finds her playing to an altered field, where Rinse FM beams disco and Benidorm-ready vocal house all day. Her ‘Beach Mode (Keep It Simple)’ slots neatly with that vibe, updating ’80s electro-boogie memes with taut, modern production and raw, biting drums applied to the see-sawing, off kilter synthlines and alternating female/robo vocals from Jessy Lanza. Flipside the vocals are rubbed out on a supple dub mix, and draped over skeletal drums on the percapella. Good stuff.
